So I get a phone call, asking for me by name, on my line which is:
1. Unlisted
2. In my mother’s name
3. NEVER given out to any companies/agencies
and the caller claims to be representing Maxim Magazine. When I asked where she got my number, she answered “Maxim Magazine”. Knowing that Maxim does not have my phone number, I again inquired where they got my numbed and her reply was again “Maxim Magazine”…
After telling her that I did NOT receive maxim AT THAT NUMBER she hung up.
Now, I dialed star[*] 69 and got the number 800-362-0796… I’ve been trying to research that number but with no luck. So far, it will cost me between $60 and $250 just to find out who owns the number. $250 to find out who called MY phone.
I call out to the masses. If anybody has access to this information would you please email me any information you have. I dunno, maybe someone in your family is in law enforcement or is a private investigator? I could use a hand…
don’t know that this will help, but just call you telephone carrier (verizon, etc.) and ask them who they suggest you call for harassing phone calls (no need to explain the whole dealie). See what happens.
I know it wasnt me who called…but if I had the number I would call it all the time….=)
Question….what exactly is freaking you out soo much about the call?
howdy there sir. i’m a passer-byer on the li community, and i decided to share this with you:
whitepages.com has a toll-free search for it’s members.
hope it helps.
ROFL. Nothing. It’s just that it’s weird that some company has my name associated with an ulisted number not even purchased under my name.
Don’t you find it odd? I do… I havent looked much into it since then, but it’s kind of disturbing that this information gets out there. I’m more curious as to what they wanted, and where they got the information.
That exact thing happened to me last summer, I got someone calling me up by name to give me a survey, on my cellphone, which was also in my mother’s name, and not given out to anyone but friends. All I could find out was that the area code was Vegas, I still do not know how they got my number and I was rippin. I yelled pretty much that entire sentiment at them, and was never called again. Weird.
It’s the devils work, you do realize this don’t you ? Either that or The Empire is on to you…..
I just got a call from this supposed MAXIM employee, but the thing is i do recieve maxim. She had my apartment on file at where i recieve the MAXIM subscriptions. But she asked me for my cellphone number which i gave, then started asking me for my CC info to recieve these free gifts. I told her no way i would give her that info, and then she started to harass me on that she would respect me more if i told her i wasnt interested and not to waste her time. And how she thinks its funny cause 95% of all purchases of magazines are made over the phone lines, least is what she told me. I told her thanks and have a nice day. And hung up after she started asking me for my checking account numbers. So i *69’d the call and got the same number as you, 800-362-0796…..so i came onto the net and searched it with google. It came up with your thread here but no number. I Even checked maxim website and no number listed. So im going to call maxim and ask if they do these kinds of calls. And im also going to give my phone company a call and see who the hell called me.
I recieve Maxim as well, but I intentionally do NOT give out my phone number (I give out the main house number)…
Just got the call…
She calls asking if my magazine has been arriving ok and if i would like a free adult video from Maxim… Sure i tell her… She says that the subscription is in my wifes name and wants to know how old she is… Then my age… So i tell her….
She then asks which credit card company gives me the best service? I tell her im not going to answer that and she gets pissy, says fine, and hangs up….
WTF?!
I’ve been getting calls from this number for about a week now, and decided to look it up – and the only reference on the web was… wait for it… in your LJ.
I *do* get Maxim – I just started a free subscription about two months ago. I wouldn’t mind talking to these yahoos – but they never answer. I pick up the phone and identify myself, and they hang up.
I’m glad to know it isn’t just me – and to see who it actually would be, if they would take the time to talk to me. NOW, I just need to figure out who to call to get the calls to stop.
I will just say first that I don’t know you, but the story goes like this…
I got a phonecall earlier today when my husband wasn’t home, the conversation went as follows…
Me: Hello
Her: Um, is *my husband’s name* there?
Me: No, may I ask who’s calling?
Her: This is Kelly
ME: Well can I take a message?
Her: No I’ll just call back later (she said this quite rudely and hung up)
Like most women would be in this situation I was a little perturbed, so I dialed *69 and got 1-800-362-0796
I tried to call it back but it has been busy ever since. I asked my husband if he knew any Kelly and he told me no, so I started searching the net for the number. That is how I ended up here. Just for the record, my husband is a long time subscriber to Maxim. I am glad this helped me clear up some confusion, but I don’t have any info about who owns the number.
Good luck,
Cynder
I keep getting phone calls from this number EVERYDAY!!! even Sundays. It rings, I say HELLO, then they hang up. So I decided to see who owns the number and I get all this. I do get Maxium, I ordered it recently for my husband. How annoying
I get them too – and sometimes twice a day.
If I pick up and say ‘hello’, I get a hang-up. If I just pick it up, I get a hang-up. If I let the machine get it, I get an empty message 0 it isn’t going away.
Of course – the number doesn’t accept calls, go figure. So – if I can track down a PHYSICAL location – I may have to go on a road trip. At the very least, I can cut the phone lines, right?
I am so glad that I did a search on this telephone number and came across this thread! I too received a rather rude phone call tonight. It went like this:
Me: Hello
Her: Is *husband’s name* there?
Me: No he isn’t here right now may I ask what this is in reference to?
Her: It is about a charge on his credit card?
Me: Oh well I do the bills what can I help you with?
Her: You’re not listed on this credit card, I’ll just call him back later?
Me: At least tell me what credit card company so that I can give him the message.
Her: No that’s OK I can get in touch with him later.
Me: Miss I don’t think you’ll be…
Her: Click!
I can’t believe how rude she was. Even though it doesn’t read this way she kind of made it sound like she wasn’t calling from a business but like I don’t know, she was talking kind of sexy at first until she realized that she wasn’t going to get my husband on the phone then she got pouty.
I was trying to tell her that she might as well talk to me because she wont be able to get in touch with my husband. He is in the Navy and unless she is capable of calling a ship at sea she is out of luck.
Anyway, I looked on my caller ID and saw this number. I called it and got an error message. I called 1-800-555-1212 (the toll free directory) but they don’t have a reverse directory. I looked on the internet but nothing. IF any of you find out anything I would love to know.
BTW, My husband too, is a long standing subscriber of Maxim. He has this thing where he’ll spell his name a certain way each time he gives out information to see if they sell his information. I have to say that he has started to receive lots of mail from Playboy asking him to join and they spell it the same way Maxim spells it. I don’t know if they sold his name to another magazine but it is interesting.
