I’ve gotten much more tolerable with Dell support, however they still managed to piss me off. I asked them about a problem I’ve been having with studdering video and their response was, The system doesn’t perform well with the battery. Use the A/C adapter….
…If I could have it in one location, plugged in all the time, I would have bought a desktop. Not a laptop!
and I would NOT have spent $3k on it either! I had a MUCH slower/underpowered laptop run full screen video perfectly. Why should this workhorse not be able to play a friggen quicktime movie!
Dell support blows. I would say about 10% of their techs actually know what they’re doing!
I’m sure you hear this all the time, but check out a Mac! My father and my sister got new computers. My dad, a Sony Viao dektop, my sister, a Dell Laptop. Both running Windows XP (Family Eddition) both began having serious issues within a month.
For further info on Macs (which I’m sure you don’t care about) check out:

Have a great day, and I wish you luck with your computer.

ACK!! What are you, Insane!??? NEVER NEVER!
Actually, I’ve been a PC person for years…. Never had any major problems with PCs or even with the Windows series of OS’s… The problems I have had are with Customer Support and Service. When you build you own machine(s) you can do your own work, but I didnt build my Dell Laptop so I have to rely on them to repair it. There’s actually no major problems with the system, though I managed to talk them into upgrading it to a better heat-sink and send me a new battery (good because Lithium Ion batteries do have a shelf life and this one is about 6 mo’s old…)
The problem I have been having I believe is due to the system running too hot and affecting the performance, but they recommended changing the battery anyways.
As for Mac..I’d sooner run linux… Apple had no respect from me until they came out with OS X (based off of BSD Unix).
Well, I am glad all is well for you. But in my experience, every one of my friends who runs windows has had awfull problems. I hear it all the time, while I sit back with nothing going wrong for myself. And while Apple may have based OSX on Unix, it was a smart move because it’s stable… but Apple is also an inventor. I’m sure you’ve heard how Apple had the “trash” icon years before windos came out with the recycle bin, and I’m sure you know the start menu on windows is a rip off of the apple menu. And where did all those track/finger pads for lap tops come from anyways? The Mac people. Why not have the best of both worlds? The stability of Unix, with the beauty and ease of use of a Mac?
I don’t want to burst your bubble, but as a PC/Linux user I have only used MacOS a few times…… and I HAVE managed to crash MacOS (earlier than OS X)
I do agree that MacOS has a more simplified GUI (Graphical User Interface) however beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. lol…. Personally, I prefer the Windows GUI and even DOS/Linux’s command line interfaces over Mac’s simplified environment. That is probably due to the fact that I grew up and was trained on PCs with DOS and Windows… UNIX/Linux has only come into play more recently when I started working in I.T. using them primarily as a server platform. I’ve followed along the development though and I can see myself switching to Linux in a few more years when it’s more broadly supported.
Perhaps Apple has begun this trend. If they made their system more portable and less proprietary to Apple hardware I think they would begin to dominate the PC market. OS X was a good move on their part. But again, I would currently run Linux or BSD before I switched to a Mac.
I have grown up on Windows as well (in fact, I am proud to say, the first computer I touched was a Comodore 64, awwwww). But after years of Windows, switching to a Mac was the best thing I ever did! I switched when it was still only up to OS 9.2
Then when OSX came out, I was blown away. And with Panther… holy mother of God – blow away AGAIN!!
Apple IS simplified, and I think that is a good thing for most computer people out there. The home users. The people that wanna write papers, listen to/download/burn/rip music, surf the net, and play (some) games. But you can go much farther with more advaced software. Final Cut Pro is the best example. It’s being used in more and more Hollywodd studios. As the AVIDs crash, companies don’t want to spend 10,000 on more software and hardware. Why not get a top of the line G5 with FCP 4?
But you can trick out the mac in lots of ways! Sure Apple made it hard to do. But have a look at ResExellence’s users desktops. Or just have a look at the entire website! Or have a look at what those crazy kids are doing over at SpyMac.com Beauty MAY BE in the eye of the beholder, and thats why there are MANY WAYS to change how your Mac looks.
I know, I know… the Mac pre-OSX crashed a lot, but it was still less often then my windows computer. But you also have to give the Mac more of a chance! If you’ve only used it a few times, how can you really say it’s not for you? (Maybe it really isn’t, because I do believe in ‘to each his own’… but at least give it a real chance).
Wow… I’ve invaded your journal with all of the Apple talk. My apologies!
LOL. No apologies…
You have your reasons for liking mac (most of which are the reasons I dislike them)….
I am impressed with OS X and I’ve had far less exposure to it than I have earlier versions. At this point in time, i’d say I’ll always be a PC person, though I agree that Mac has entered a new era and the way they handle their future could change the way I view them.
But I’m stubborn, and I like my PC! 😉
