This week, Kelly and I received our trial shipment from Blue Apron. Blue Apron is a mail-order gourmet food service that delivers recipes and pre-portioned ingredents for three meals for two people for $60 each week. (That’s $10 per person, per meal). Check out the unboxing video and some more of my opinion on the service below.
As you can see in the video, the package contains thermal padding and ice packs to keep everything cold and fresh while it’s in transit. The recipes themselves are printed on quality stock and the case is full of all the ingredients you’ll need for two portions of each meal.
The portions are standard size, and Kelly and I have our reservations about whether or not they give enough food. We cooked the first dish, Kumquat-Lime Glazed Tilapia with Brussels Sprouts and Freekeh (featured in the opening sequence of the video). Once all was said and done, the portions weren’t bad, though we definitely could have gone for a second helping of fish!
I’m pleased so far, and thanks to a friend, this trial didn’t cost us anything. Our first paid delivery comes next week. What’s in store? Short-Rib Burgers on Pretzel Buns, Turkey Cutlets with Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Broccoli and Caper Sauce, and Latin-Spiced Shrimp in Butter Lettuce Cups with Red Quinoa & Poblano, Jicama and Orange Salad. I’ll keep everyone posted on my opinions of Blue Apron and if we keep it going, put it on hold, or step on the brakes altogether!
