Those who know me, can imagine my excitement when a new wing place opened around the block from my work. I pulled in to the parking lot immediately upon seeing the grand opening signs for Planet Wings in Bethpage today. I wish I could say that the experience met my expectations.
Immediately when I walked in, I got a strong sense of “fast food”. The decor reminded me of a popular burger joint. You know, the one with the clown spokesperson. Looking at the menu, the first thing I noticed were the burgers. Odd, for a place called “Planet Wings” but as I looked on I saw their wing menu with 24 award winning flavors.
Their wings are available from $0.90/wing for 5 wings up to $0.65/wing for orders of 100 or more. If you’re looking to sample among their 24 flavors, you’ll have to shell out the extra money for separate orders at the higher rates as they won’t mix/match your wings. I wanted to split up an order of 15, but they wouldn’t have it. Seeing the premium pricing, I expected normal to large sized wings, but was shocked to find what I call Pigeon Wings. These are the small wings served by most dive bars on their ten cent wing nights. I was unimpressed.
I ordered two 5 pcs orders. One “Hot BBQ” flavored and one “Suicidal” flavored. While I was not thrilled with the wings themselves, I did enjoy the flavors quite a bit. The hot BBQ was delightfully sweet and tangy with just a bit of heat, and the suicidal was equally delicious but with a fierce bite that lingered on long after the wing itself.
This next observation may only appeal to geeks. As a web guy myself, I found it quite amusing to see an HTML5 logo positioned along with their Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app icons on the take-out bag. This logo means little to nothing to consumers, and at the time of this review their web site declares itself as HTML 4.01, so I don’t know what they were thinking when they designed the bags. In fact, nobody cares if a restaurant’s website uses HTML5 or not. It doesn’t affect the food or service.
Although I was disappointed in the value, choices and size of the wings, the taste was there. If they would replace the small wingettes with normal sized chicken wings, I think they might do quite well and perhaps be able to compete with the other fast-food wing places in the area.
If you’re looking for good wings on Long Island, here’s my local choices:
Even Flow Bar and Grill, Bay Shore (Incredible flavors, Winner of the Long Island Wing Festival)
Hooters, Farmingdale (Reopened Recently, Wings available Breaded or Naked in traditional Hooters flavors)
Duffy’s Ale House, Lindenhurst (Good wings. Get ’em by the basket)
Wings over Farmingdale, Farmingdale (Fast food, but decent. Many flavor choices)
…or check out Bring The Wing for reviews of other local wing locations in the area!
The sauces are good, the wings are fully cooked, the french fries are really good. However….for a place that’s called Planet Wings…the size of the wings is below average. Sometimes I swear the wings are sparrow wings….meaning they are kind of small. I don’t like huge wings, just a bit more standard in size would be good.
I did not try the fries, since it’s not called “Planet Fries” 🙂 I actually like normal to large sized wings. There used to be a place in Long Beach (Just Wing It) that had incredible full-size wings and plenty of great sauces and they were baked, not fried. Currently, Even Flow and Hooters are my faves! (and sorry i took so long to approve your post. It was marked as spam, so i missed it)
